Colocation
Co-location (also known as Server Hosting) gives you complete control over your web hosting provision. The Netsight Metropolitan Colocation Centre, in central Bristol, offers industry standard 19" rack space at highly competitive prices.
For sites that have outgrown shared hosting, or need more control in their setup, colocation is the next step. If you need to run databases, or custom software, then co-location allows you the flexibility to run your own server with whatever software you need.
Netsight is also a member of RIPE (the European IP Address Registry), which allows us to directly allocate blocks of IP addresses to our clients. Each customer is allocated a dedicated IP subnet for their server(s). This provides extra security and privacy, as traffic to/from your server cannot be observed by other customers in the facility.
Please take a look through the Information section of this site to find out more about the facility itself.
Choosing a Colocation Package
The package you need, and its price, will depend on the following:
- Rackspace - Measured in U (standard rack units, the smallest being 1U - enough for a single "pizzabox" server). For large requirements, you can purchase rackspace in full racks (47U) at a discounted price.
- Power Required - Measured as the current drawn by the server when it is under maximum load. The speed and number of processors, the number and type of disks, and the number of power supplies, will all contribute to the maximum current that your server(s) will draw. The manufacturer should be able to provide figures for maximum power consumption in Watts, or current in Amps. All servers brought in are tested on an industrial ammeter.
- Switch Ports - Most servers and applications will require only one switchport, over which all traffic to the machine(s) will be routed. More are available though.
- Bandwidth - The most complex and variable part of the package. Bandwidth is available as either a monthly transfer volume (in GB per month), or as a fixed, dedicated line speed. If you opt for a monthly transfer volume, you will be able to burst up to the full available line speed, which at any given time should be in the range of 2Mbps to 5Mbps. Fixed, dedicated lines are available up to Gigabit speeds, but of course bandwidth supplied in this way is more expensive than shared bandwidth.
- Usage Profile - Bandwidth is very much a supply and demand commodity. If your requirement is for large amounts of off-peak bandwidth, and your peak-time usage is very low, we can probably arrange a discount.
Our Entry-Level package is as follows:
1U of rackspace
0.8A max current draw
1 switchport
10GB/month data transfer limit
Price: £990 (+vat) per annum, payable in advance.
Because of the number of variables involved, we offer quotations based on your exact requirements. If you would like us to prepare a quotation, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
